The Law is an Ass Officially

I refer of course to this particular story in the Times.

The man had it in storage, it wasnt being used and from what we can gather it was locked away. Yet the judge sent him in for five years. He legally owned it in the US

Criminals, lets face it the lorry driver who killed six people on the M6 got just three years. This man has done nothing apart from owning a gun, and one that wasnt even with him It was in storage.

Under a Libertarian government he would be released and given back his gun.

  1. We brits seem to be struck with fear the second guns are mentioned which leaves any rational debate on the subject, and thus any chance of having rational gun laws, about as likely as finding a needle in a haystack.

  2. Bet he isn't "of colour" or a Dunblane friend of George Robertson.

  4. Nice to see that the comments on the Times website are all protesting at the harshness of the sentence. It helps me to maintain my belief in people's basic common sense.

  5. This is totally crazy! Can't he appeal?

  6. I'm no lawyer, but I don't see what grounds he'd have for an appeal. Unfortunately the case in law is dead against him - he imported a Section 5 firearm into the country. Mere possession can get you 10 years, even if the judge agrees that you had no criminal intent.

Under a Libertarian government, the 1997 pistol ban would be repealed. Pistols would still be subject to licensing, but it would obviously make a lot more sense for the police to just sort out the paperwork to grant this guy an FAC than to go to the trouble and expense of prosecuting him and having him locked up for years. Even under the present law, I think they would have had the option of just confiscating the gun and cautioning him.

  7. Not to mention Wood Green and Turnpike Lane, perhaps 'depraved' would be more accurate; I'm told that Wightman Road and The Ladder now form a sort of exclave middle class colony for Crouch End, on the other side of the tracks.

  8. Wightman Road and the Ladder are outside the constituency, I think they come under Tottenham, As for depraved Wood Green and Turnpike Lane I live in that area of my constituency And it is officially deprived I got a stamp duty exemption due to that fact . One of Gorgon's only real benefits of chancellorship
